What Is Acne
August 8, 2014
Acne Vulgaris more commonly known as acne is a condition of the skin whereby the oil glands in the hair follicles become blocked and trapped by a build-up of sebum (oil), skin cells and hair. More commonly experienced during puberty and is stimulated by male hormones, testosterone, which is produced by the adrenal glands of both males and females.
This build-up of skin, oil and hair will begin to form a lump like mass which eventually becomes infected with bacteria feeding on this build-up, resulting in inflammation. Breakouts and congestion begins to develop when the mass begins to break down.
Scientists from the Washington University School of Medicine found depending on the strain or type of bacteria found will determine the severity of the acne. They explained in that not all forms of bacteria will create pimples, there is a strain of the bacteria that could actually keep the skin congestion free!
There are several classifications:
Whiteheads – small in size an remain under the skin.
Blackheads – Visible on the surface of the skin with a black surface.
Papules – Small pink bumps visible on the surface of the skin.
Pustules – Red bumps filled with pus that are visible on the surface of the skin.
Nodules – Painful deeply embedded red inflamed bumps visible on the surface of the skin.
Cysts – Very painful inflamed bumps filled with pus, these are more than likely to lead to deep pitted scarring.
